Interested in having your students write their own nonfiction picture books? I’ve been doing this project for four years now, and I love it more every time.
You can read my overview of the unit, including my slideshow presentation about it from NCTE in 2023. Bonus: several example books written by my 5th graders!
Our school librarian, Ellen Bunn, and I were thrilled to be invited to share about this project and how we collaborate during library time. All four articles are now available on Melissa Stewart’s blog, Celebrate Nonfiction.
- Nonfiction Picture Books in 5th Grade, Part 1: Overview
- Nonfiction Picture Books in 5th Grade, Part 2: Investigating Mentor Texts in the Library for Book Category and Style. This one includes seven new text sets for the 5 Kinds of Nonfiction.
- Nonfiction Picture Books in 5th Grade: Part 3: Exploring Mentor Texts in the Library for Text Structure and Craft Moves

Do you teach nonfiction writing to students? I’d love to hear what you think!
